Mayaguana, Bahamas
For experienced & adventurous anglers who want shots at big bonefish!

For experienced and die hard anglers looking to pursue large Bahamian bonefish, the island of Mayaguana is a great option.   Bonefishing on Mayaguana is not a numbers game, so this is not a destination for beginners or those looking to rack up impressive numbers of fish.   But for experienced anglers looking to get shots at bonefish in the 6-10lb range on a remote and peaceful Bahamian island, Mayaguana could be for you.

Mayaguana is the eastern-most Bahamian island, and is approximately 24 miles long and between 2-6 miles wide.  The population of Mayaguana is small, and only around 300 people call it home.  The friendly residents live in the settlements of Abraham's BayBetsy Bay & Pirates Well.  The island is known for it's quiet, laid back atmosphere. The clear, pristine ocean that surrounds Mayaguana is home to an abundance of marine life, including deep-sea and shallow-water sport fish.

In addition to bonefish, anglers can expect opportunities at triggerfish, barracuda, jacks and sharks.   A bluewater excursion for mahi mahi, tuna or wahoo may also be an option if desired.

The Baycaner Beach Resort sits on a beautiful sandy beach in the settlement of Pirate's Well, which derives its name from the well at its center. Rumor has it the well was dug by pirates who sailed the waters of the Bahamas centuries ago. There are 16 rooms at the resort, and each one is steps away from the ocean and has air-conditioning, satellite television and a private bath. When you get hungry, make your way to the waterfront dining room.

Choose a delicious Bahamian specialty from the menu or have your Catch-of-the-day prepared the way you like it. The bar is always stocked with beverages, and runs on the honor system. Enjoy a tropical cocktail,  relax and play pool, watch television or make use of wireless Internet.   Leave the hassles of city life behind and enjoy the beauty of Mayaguana.

Within walking distance from the resort, you can stalk large bonefish or explore the natural habitat of the Bahamian national bird, the flamingo.  The unspoiled reefs offer world-class snorkeling and scuba diving. If you prefer a more simple experience there are miles of secluded beaches available for your relaxing pleasure.  You can rent a vehicle to explore the flats for $100/day, and canoes are also available for rent to explore some of the flats and creek systems.

Mayaguana is a quiet and peaceful island suited to experienced anglers who want to get away for a week and have shots at some truly big bonefish.
